Junior boxing champ attacked in Cardiff park

A JUNIOR boxing champion has been beaten in a park attack, leaving him with a broken hand and severe bruising.

Romeo Romaeo, 12, is Wales’ number-one schoolboy amateur boxing champion having won the title from Jack Parry earlier this year in February. But last week he was attacked in a city park while out with his father.

The incident happened as Romeo was training with his dad Tony, 48, in Jubilee Park in Leckwith, Cardiff.

Tony says his son was grabbed by the neck and thrown to the ground before having his right hand stamped on.

Romeo – who is due to compete for Wales against Croatia next month – had to be taken to hospital.

His mum Elaine, 35, said: “He was very shaken up and was crying afterwards. He’s still very sore and hasn’t been to school all week.

“We just hope that he’ll be better in time to box against Croatia.”

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further inquiries.”
