The world famous St Andrew’s Sporting Club is moving to a new home as it prepares to enter its 34th year.
Club owner Tommy Gilmour has announced that the club will move from its current base at the Holiday Inn Glasgow City West to the city’s five-star Radisson SAS hotel.
The first show at the new home of Scottish boxing will be the annual Burns Night on Monday, the 22nd of January, 2007.
“The St Andrew’s Sporting Club has been recognised as the home of Scottish boxing ever since its first show on January 29, 1973, when Ken Buchanan beat Jim Watt on a fifteen round points decision to win the British lightweight title in what was then the Albany Hotel,” said Tommy. “The Albany has, of course, undergone a number of name and ownership changes during the subsequent period, but the one constant has been the presence of the St Andrew’s Sporting Club.
“However, times have changed and the world has moved on. I believe a move to the five-star SAS Radisson will ensure the Club and its members have a base which will provide the very highest standard of setting and cuisine.”
The St Andrew’s Sporting Club’s new deal at the Radisson SAS will see it continue to promote boxing shows from September to June every season, including its famous Ladies’ Night in December and Summer Ball in May, as well as a number of charity events across the year.
“The move will allow us to not only consolidate, but grow our reputation as a nurturing ground for the very best of Scottish boxing talent, as well as continuing to be a major contributor to Scottish charities – for whom we have raised over £300,000 through the years.
“We started with the arguably the greatest fight in the history of Scottish boxing and we have since promoted in excess of 300 events, including countless Scottish, British, Commonwealth, European and World championships.
Everyone who is anyone in Scottish boxing over the past three decades –Jim Watt, Ken Buchanan, Pat Clinton, Paul Weir, Scott Harrison, Drew Docherty, Gary Jacobs and Kevin Anderson – has fought at the St Andrew’s. “Our reputation stretches far beyond these shores and we are recognised as a truly global brand after winning world promoter of the year awards from the WBO and IBO. “The Club is also firmly established as not only the home of Scottish boxing, but also a place where members and their guests can mingle with some of the most significant figures in sport. “Over the years we’ve had greats from the whole spectrum of sports – including Lennox Lewis, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, Gavin and Scott Hastings, Phil Taylor, Allan Wells, Sir Alex Ferguson and Walter Smith – as top table guests of honour.”Tommy Gilmour has announced that the club will move from its current base at the Holiday Inn Glasgow City West to the city’s five-star Radisson SAS hotel.
