Hyland Brothers
Author: Barking & Dagenham Post

Posted: 21/07/2008 11:27:00

BROTHERLY GLOVE . . . The three Hyland brothers pose with trainer Paul Cook during their days at the Dagenham gym - all three have returned home to Dublin to claim a history-making Irish title treble.

BARKING boxer Marc Callaghan's hopes of claiming the All-Ireland super bantamweight championship ended in disappointment with a 10-round points defeat against unbeaten Paul Hyland in Dublin's Tallaght Stadium on Saturday night, writes LEN WHALEY.

However, the victory marked a history-making treble for fighting family of three Hyland brothers who started their professional campaigns under Dagenham trainer Paul Cook.

Four years ago, Paul Hyland travelled from Dublin with his two brothers Patrick and Eddie, all three Irish amateur boxing stars, to launch their paid careers under the promotional banner of ex-heavyweight Jess Harding.

They soon settled with winning runs under the guidance of former boxer Cook, who was building a successful stable of champions including his own son, world title challenger, Nicky.

However, two years ago the Dublin trio split with Harding and returned to Ireland where they continued their successful campaigns in their home city under the promotion of their father Paddy Hyland snr - a well known figure on the Irish boxing scene.

They continued their success with good wins and the two older Hyland brothers clinched their Irish championship success on the same show at Dublin's famous National Stadium in April.

The 27-year-old Eddie Hyland was a points winner over Kevin O'Hara to become the new Irish lightweight champion.

Patrick, 24, came through a thrilling battle with Paul Griffin to claim the All-Ireland featherweight crown on a third round stoppage victory.

The pressure was on Paul to complete the history-making treble triumph on Saturday night by defeating former English super bantamweight champion Callaghan, whose Irish family background has given him the chance of fighting for the All-Ireland title.

With three times the experience of his 11-fight Irish rival, the 29-year-old Callaghan certainly provided a tough test.

The seasoned campaigner with ten years pro experience behind him, battled all the way and at times silenced the Dublin fans as he took control of the exchanges, scoring with two-fisted bursts.

However, for most of the way, his advances were checked as the taller Hyland piled up the points with accurate attacks on his way to a points victory.

At the final bell it was the Dublin fans who were celebrating into the night after Hyland was named a 98-93 points winner on the official scorecard of referee David Irving.

Coincidentally, it was the second successive defeat against Irish opposition for Callaghan, who was outpointed by Belfast featherweight Martin Lindsay in Italy in May.

On Saturday, the Hyland supporting squad were also celebrating the victory of brother Patrick, who outpointed Kenyan opponent Geoff Munika at the Tallaght basketball Stadium for his 13th straight pro win.
