Featherweight Raymond Moylett was celebrating on the double at tonight's National U/19 finals at the National Stadium in Dublin after he landed an Irish title and was also presented with the boxer of the tournament award.
The sixteen year old from the St Anne's club in Westport Mayo put in a storming performance to claim the 57Kg title in an end to end final with Eamon Finnegan, and he won special praise from the President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, Dominic O'Rourke.
"It is fantastic to see talented young boxers like Raymond Moylett coming through and he fully deserved this win and the boxer of the tournament award. Raymond has already won a Cadet title this season and he is having a fantastic year." said Dominc O'Rourke.
Moylett added: "It was a tough final and fair play to Eamon Finnegan as he kept coming back at me and he never gave up. I am delighted with the
victory and I would like to thank my club and my coaches for all the help they have given me."
"I am absolutely thrilled to have won the boxer of the tournament award and it is a very proud moment for me."
Christopher Rice and Kieran O'Neill got the evening off to a high tempo start with O'Neill forcing his opponent into a standing counts in round three of the all Ulster light flyweight showdown.
Cavan's John Joe Nevin followed that up with a convincing 51Kg victory over Prabjoi Singh who took standing counts in the second,third and fourth round before the ref stopped the contest.
Cairn Lodge bantamweight Marc McCullough appeared to be en route to victory after taking the opening two rounds against Sean Kilroy but took a count in the third as the Holy Family Drogheda man came storming back.
However, McCullough withstood the late pressure to ensure that the first three titles of the night went to Ulster.
Jamie Kavanagh and Anthony Cacace produced one of the contests of the evening which saw Cacace go in at the bell for the end of the third with
a eight points advantage. Kavanagh pulled out all the stops in the final round but Cacace held out before being handed a 15-7 verdict.
Light welterweight Philip Sutcliffe was the second Crumlin boxer in the ring on the night and he ensured that Dublin club claimed a title
with a hard earned but deserved 16-11 win over David Walsh, but Bernard Redmond was always trailing to Alfredo Meli who claimed Ulster's fifth title of the evening.
The all Connaught middleweight clash went the way of Donal Ward who was ahead throughout his contest with Galway's Ian Carmichael. Light heavyweight Declan Trainor then claimed Leinsters first title with a 16-9 win over Ciaran McAuley.
Offaly heavyweight Dan Nevin led for the opening three rounds of a hard hitting encounter with Con Sheehan and was also ahead at the end
of the fourth and final round and super heavyweight Antoine Griffen stopped Kevin Carey in round one.
Speaking after the tournament Dominic O'Rourke thanked everyone for their participation in what he described as a top class tournament.
He said: "There were some fantastic bouts over the last two weekends including tonight's finals which produced some very exciting contests
and judging by the quality of the boxing at the tournament the future of Irish amateur boxing is looking very bright.
"I would like to thank all the boxers, coaches and clubs for taking part in this tournament and the referees and judges for all their efforts.
"I would also like to thank the staff at the National Stadium for all their efforts in making the 2007 National U/19 Championships run so smoothly and efficiently."
Provincially Antim/Ulster were the big winners at the Championships claiming five of the of eleven the titles on offer, while Leinster/Dublin took home three and Connaught two.
