Granite City ABC – Scotland
Granite City ABC came from a very small beginning where it was started in 1997 with just 3 boys, David, Lee and a friend, David and Lee being sons of founder David McAllister. Today we have 22 regular boxers with over 40 boys training regularly at the former scout hut in Clifton Lane, Aberdeen.
The scout hut has since been transformed into well equipped gym with great training facilities and excellent Senior Coaches in David McAllister Jnr and Graham Morrice along with Youth Coaches Steven Willox and Robbie Mackie.
We didn’t have to wait long before having our first junior champ Lee McAllister in 1998 at 60kgs who travelled to Mosney Holiday Camp in Ireland for the Gaelic games and won gold.
We had to wait until 2004 for our first senior title with James Ancliff wining Bantamweight and repeating the same in 2005. In 2005 we also got our first Four Nations gold medal with our Flyweight Richard Muncie, also getting Four Nation silver medal in 2005 was James Ancliff and Matthew McAllister. We also had 5 national (Scottish) champs in 2005 and repeating the same in 2006.
In 2006 current Scottish Featherweight champ Darren Traynor travelled to Canada and beat Canadian Commonwealth Games representative Isha Shiba twice on points before travelling on to Poland and getting a gold medal in the Multi Nations.
In November 2006 4 of our boxers were in a North Select v West Select with our 17 year old Junior champ stepping up to senior level and beating the current Scottish Lt. Welterweight in the process. Steven McAllister gave away a year to current Four Nations gold medallist Tommy Philbin beating him on points.
