Michael McCarthy is from a boxing family with his father Gary, a respected Coach at the Dagenham (Police/Community) Boxing Club and elder brother Tony a very good Junior boxer.
All the McCarthy family started their relationship with amateur boxing at the famous Newham Boxing Club where they quickly established themselves as a top fighting family.
With a decent record of 9 bouts and 6 wins, young Michael decided to switch to the Dagenham club where he settled quickly. Not long after his move he was joined by father Gary.
In his 1st year with Dagenham, Michael entered the National Schools Boxing Championships and looked very unfortunate not to get the nod against Danny Arnold (Wednesbury ABC) in the class ‘A’ Final at under 34kg (2003).
Michael soon bounced back from that defeat and went on to another level – boxing for an England Schools team in South Africa, then defeating some of the countries leading prospects.
Throughout 2003/2004 Michael met no fewer than 5 National Champions – beating them all on club shows, but of course it was National Titles Michael desperately wanted. His commitment to that cause never ever faded, even when he did get some ‘close ones’ go against him.
From the start of the 2005/2006 season. Michael prepared meticulously for the forthcoming Golden Gloves Championships. This preparation would see Michael go 16 bouts undefeated – rare these days.
In January 2006 Michael commenced his Junior ABA Title bid with 2 good wins in 1 day at the Five Star Gym in Harold Hill. 1st up was Swaley Hedges (West Ham) who was beaten by points, then came Tony Farmer (formerly Repton – now Lion ABC) who was retired after 2 rounds. Michael continued with good wins against Luke Bates (Earlsfield). George Fox (Eltham) and Luke Sweeney (New Addington) to capture the London Title.
Onto the Final in May 2006, where Michael beat Jamie Samson (Steel City) 10-1, a score which didn’t reflect the bout – which was much closer,, but Michael always looked in control. At last, National Title number one.
Later that month Michael stepped up another level for the ‘Four Nations’ in Scotland. Again, Michael produced some great form and after 2 straight point wins against the UK’s best – Michael captured Title number two and established himself as the England number 1 at 54kg (1991).
Still no call-up from England ……….
In June 2006 Michael Captained a Dagenham Team who travelled to Florida, USA where once again – he done the business spanking the Yanks.
November 2006 saw his 1st attempt at the NACYP’s where in his London Final he was pitched against classy Bexley foe – Joshua Paine. These 2 had net 2 1/2years earlier on a Dagenham club show where the Bexley lad given Michael a close call.
This time Michael boxed beautifully in the lst two rounds (2 genuine knock-downs) and eased into the National ¼ Final. A points win against John Cash (St Albans) then earned Michael another Semi final spot where he quickly took care of Wales No.1 – Ophie Price (St Josephs ABC).
Final number 4 proved to be the off day everyone was waiting for. Take nothing away from Ricky Johnson (Tamworth) who earned a 1 point win over Michael, but this was a day Michael would rather forget – and not just because he lost.
Michael now looks set to move up to Featherweight where you can expect to see more Titles coming his way. His focus and commitment are a testament to his achievements so far. Michael will keep banging on the door for that elusive England call-up, but has the option of boxing for Ireland due to his family roots (if England continue to ignore him).
Expect to see Michael in the forthcoming Junior ABA Championships (April 2007) and then he’ll be out to set the record straight with the NACYP’s.
And could he be Dagenham’s 1st National Senior ABA Champion for almost 57 years ………….
